haven’t even had a chance to rake yet! Amazing. The earliest recorded
snowfall was Sept 20 – so we almost broke a record! You can read more about this and see some pictures at our local NBC website – www.ktuu.com It is the top story today – just click and read.
So – that brings me to my next topic – I’m getting out of here soon!
Heehee! I’m heading back to Atlanta somewhere around the 2nd week of October. I’m flying stand-by so I have some flexibility on when to go, which is really nice. I’m planning to fly into Orlando, visit my roommate who just moved there and then to Atlanta. While I’m sad to be going and will miss my family and friends here in Alaska, I am looking forward to seeing everyone in Georgia again and picking up with life there! My room is still there (I continued renting it over the summer) and I’m going to look for a car to purchase down there. I am looking for something in the $2K range – preferably a Honda or Toyota (for reliability reasons), but I’m open to most anything at this point. I’d love to have a Honda Prelude with 4- wheel steering again (yes, steering – not 4WD)! Please let me know if you have any ideas or leads on a vehicle!
This winter I am looking forward to being involved in volunteering the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and at the church I attend in Marietta. I’d like to make more new friends and, believe it or not, I am becoming an "outdoorsy" woman! I would like to climb Stone Mountain and I’m looking forward to hiking Kennesaw Mountain too! Here in Anchorage we have a mountain called Flat Top. It is a very popular area and seems like a pretty easy hike. I determined that this summer I would go up to Flat Top. I have lived here all my life and never been up it. Lots of people go up it on a regular basis – it’s very popular! There are multiple trails and different levels so you can start slow and work into the hike.
Total elevation is 3550 feet, and the parking lot starts at 2200 feet, so it’s only a 1300 foot climb. The amazing thing is – the first time I went there, I made it ALL the way to the top! I had the encouragement of a friend from work who was totally awesome during the whole thing! It too 1 hour and 45 minutes to get to the top the first time, and by the last time I went it was under an hour to the top! Unfortunately there is snow up there now, so I won’t be able to go up again this year. I really enjoy climbing/hiking and I can’t believe I’ve never done it before! As most of you know I am not much of an outdoorsy gal – for the most part I’d much rather go shopping than hang out with the bugs! I prefer the comforts of a hotel/lodge to camping in the wilderness! But during this winter in Georgia I had a lot of time to reflect and examine myself and identify areas of change. I found that I am pretty one-sided when it comes to my interests – and I desire to be well-rounded. One of the things I determined I would like to change is my aversion to outdoor activities – camping, hiking, fishing, etc.. Didn’t get to go fishing, but I’ve been both camping and hiking now, and I’m ready to do more! It’s been a great experience, and one that I’ll continue to expand on!
Work has been a lot of fun for the most part – but I’m ready for the season to be over. We work pretty long hours and now we are down to the last week. I would consider doing it again next summer under the right circumstances – we’ll see.
My niece Lisa is so adorable right now – I can hardly imagine leaving her.
She is speaking very well and it’s so fun to watch her form ideas and come up with her own perceptions and insights. She sings her alphabet and can do subtraction already (3-1=2) and she’s not even 3 yet! :D I’m very proud of her!
Living with mom and dad has been great – I haven’t been home much at all this summer, so we haven’t been able to spend a whole lot of time together, but the time we have had has been good. Mom and I actually get to talk more when I’m gone than while I was here! Kinda crazy! I’m glad they were willing to have me here this summer!
There you have my summer in a nutshell. It has been filled with exploring
Alaska, playing with friends, hiking/climbing, and working! You can see
some pictures of my adventures this summer online soon – I’ll send a separate email in a few days with the link for those pictures.
If I have not seen you yet this summer and you are in Alaska, I would love to see you! I am trying to get together with everyone I can in the next few weeks before I leave so if there is a good time for you please let me know.
Those of you in Georgia – I’ll be seeing you soon! Blessings to all of you – thank you for sharing this adventure with me! Please let me know how life is treating you and how I can pray for you! Hope to hear from you soon!
Blessings to you all,
Debbi :o)
