update from atlanta - gobble gobble

11/27/04
Hi all! Happy belated thanksgiving to you! I wish you all happy and joyus holidays – past and still to come! Let me give you my new info first, and then I’ll spin my tales of life in the city! LOL! I no longer have my Alaskan phone – I’m officially semi-Georgian now! Please email me for the number….don’t really want to put it out here on the net. It’s Verizon, so if any of you have Verizon, we can talk on our cells with no minutes charged! Whoohoo! Now if you don’t want to call me long distance, you can call my toll-free number on the bottom of my email updates, and my “assistant” Kate will call my cell and tell me you are on the line. This doesn’t cost me anything, so feel free. If I’m available, I’ll answer. If I’m not, please leave a message so I know you called! Thanks!

Now for the email update. The email I am currently checking is the katewwdb.com one - if you don't have that ask me for it also.

Now for the update part! This may be long so grab a cup of coffee and let’s visit for a few!

I am living in the same house I lived in last spring – with two new roommates though. There are 4 of us total – only one is still here from when I left in the spring. My new roomies are very nice and we all seem to get along pretty well. And, Jill, one of my old roommates – left me her FULL SIZE BED! Yea! What a blessing it is to sleep on a bed with a mattress! Who would have thought it could be so exciting!

I am working full time as a personal assistant for Sheri – the gal I worked for in the spring. She has a consulting business, and was willing to hire me while she has work – looks like through February or so. That has been great – she and her family are really amazing and I love them all dearly. The kids (she has 4) are so much fun – but they also help me realize how much of a blessing it is to be childless right now! I love other people’s kids – you can have fun with them and still go home at the end of the day! I am learning to appreciate what God has given or not given me for this season of my life!

I had been looking to purchase a car since I arrived, and have been borrowing Sheri and Arlin’s extra vehicle. They have been great about letting me use their 3rd car, but I have been having no luck with getting a car. I have looked at many, but nothing seemed reliable. A week or so ago, my good friend Neil told me he would let me use his car for the winter, then return it when I leave for the summer! It is now an extra car for him, and we ended up working out that I bought it from him and will sell it back to him when I leave. So I am now driving a ’95 Saturn SC2! It’s a great car – lots of miles, but he has taken really good care of it! And because it’s the same car as the one I drive in Alaska – I feel right at home in it! I am so blessed.

I have done a few volunteer things – the most extravagant one was the Symphony Ball, a fundraiser for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. It is their biggest fundraiser of the year, and it is quite the formal gala. Men in tuxes, women in formal gowns. It is held at the Intercontinental Hotel – Atlanta’s newest 5-star hotel – just opened November 4. I went in Friday morning for a few hours to help with set up, then spent the entire day there Saturday – helping to get ready for the Ball in the evening. I brought my clothes with me and changed there – didn’t wear a formal gown, but something very fun and shimmery with slinky pants and strappy sandals. The glittery top was a bit much for this event – but now I know….it was certainly fine though! When the evening came I was helping with the silent auction. It ended up being kind of a fiasco, but for the most part it was ok. Lots of work, but tons of fun. Then at the end of the nite, I was able to stay in a room there at the hotel. It was a corner room on the 17th floor – with an amazing view. Out one window I could see Buckhead (a business area of Atlanta – lots of tall buildings – my favorites!), and out of the other window, I could see trees in all colors for miles – it was gorgeous. The room was very luxurious – with overstuffed down pillows – 6 of them on the king size bed, a down comforter and lots of fluffy blankets! The bathroom was amazing with lots of mirrors, a giant shower stall, and a huge garden tub – it was about 3 feet deep! I’ve never seen a tub so deep! My feet hurt so badly by the time we were done – I went upstairs and took a long soak in the tub – it was so wonderful! It was almost 3am by the time I went to bed, but it was so worth it. I ordered room service for breakfast which was lots of fun. I was sad to leave, but it was quite an experience. The rooms really aren’t that expensive ($200) but it was such a blessing to be able to stay there for free! :D It’s good to be a volunteer!
